The past few years have seen the emergence of a new phenomenon—for the first time, globalization has expanded beyond the manufacturing and resources sectors and into the larger, faster growing, and higher value-added services sector. This development—often referred to as offshoring or offshore outsourcing—will have major economic and political consequences in the years to come. The service sector accounts for 78% of U.S. employment and, for the first time in history, is being exposed to competition from workers in low-income countries. Businesses are rushing to employ low-cost workers, governments in developing countries are working to promote offshoring, and state and local governments in developed countries are struggling with how to respond. In this talk, Robert Kennedy will explore the phenomenon of offshoring from several perspectives. More...

Great Lakes Entrepreneur's Quest Kickoff

This year's Great Lakes Entrepreneur's Quest (GLEQ) kicks off its Fall Cycle training schedule next week with a “double-header” presentation that includes an introduction to this year's competition and an educational session on market analysis.
The GLEQ's free training session “Market and Competitive Analysis” session will also include a 15-minute introduction to this year's GLEQ business plan competition, highlighting new improvements to the Quest.
Anyone interested in entrepreneurship or the GLEQ competition is encouraged to attend this free event. The training aspect of the session is designed to help entrepreneurs of all experience levels better understand the process of performing market analysis.

BBSA Speaker Series: John Barfield

In 1945, seventeen-year-old John W. Barfield, the son of an Alabama sharecropper, dropped out of high school to enlist in the Army. The majority of his two-year tour was served in Germany and France. Upon his discharge, he worked as a custodian for $1.75 per hour at the University of Michigan.
Hard work and dedication eventually led him to form his own company, the Barfield Cleaning Company, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. International Telephone and Telegraph Company acquired Barfield Cleaning in 1969. In 1974, Mr. Barfield incorporated Barfield Building Maintenance Company, which was acquired by Unified Building Maintenance Services, Inc. of Washington, DC in 1986. In 1977, he incorporated John Barfield & Associates (later renamed Bartech, Inc.), and a year later he founded Barfield Manufacturing Company, which was acquired by Mascotech Industries, an automotive supplier and public company in 1991.
Mr. Barfield is the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Bartech Group, Inc. located in Livonia, Michigan. Bartech is among the nation's largest, independent professional staffing services and outsourcing firms, specializing in the placement of engineering and information technology professionals, and managing the staffing requirements of multi-national corporations on an outsourced basis. Bartech's PILLAR Technology Group subsidiary supports Fortune 1000 companies with fixed-price IT solutions services, and in-house training support. Bartech, with annual revenues exceeding $200 million, operates 22 offices in five states and Canada and employs more than 3,700 professionals.

Charles Fry, CEO and CTO, Aurum Information Technology
Since leaving Ann Arbor in 1986 (UofM '82-'86), Charles Fry has been starting technology companies. Some have flopped, some were successfully sold, one was venture capital backed, and he is currently working on his latest - and last - start-up. All of the companies had good teams - some of them had great teams. Focused principally on technology services companies, Fry has learned to sense the client needs and demands and tailor technology-based solutions to fill their needs.
Aurum IT is a technology outsourcing company focused on providing small and medium businesses with cost-effective professional IT services. Doing for IT services what ADP did for payroll, Aurum plans to be the preferred method of managing, building, and servicing information technology in companies with less than $1B in annual revenue. Charles currently lives in central Ohio with his wife Gretchen and their six wonderful kids.

John Leckrone, Adobe Ventures
John manages investments in early stage enterprise software companies for Adobe Ventures. John has also held senior positions in product management at Adobe Systems and business development at Netscape Communications. Prior to Netscape, John spent six years in Ford Motor Company's Marketing Leadership program in a variety of sales and marketing roles and two years as an independent consultant. John received a BA in economics from UCLA and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
B. Rana, Intel Capital
Bhavanipratapsinh Rana joint Intel Capital in 2000 in Bangalore and was responsible for the evaluation, structuring, negotiations and closing of Intel Capital's Indian investments. He currently works in Santa Clara , making and managing investments in the mobile communication sector.
Prior to joining Intel Capital, Mr. Rana worked with Andersen in their consulting practice in Bangalore , India and a cross border niche investment boutique firm. During his tenure in consulting, Mr. Rana worked with clients in the power sector that were entering India's power sector (which was under a process of deregulation and privatization) as well as clients in the pharmaceutical industry (strategy and M&A). During his tenure with the investment boutique firm he worked on private equity fundings and was also involved in incubating an optical networking startup which was launched in association with Sycamore Networks in India .
Mr. Rana is a Chartered Accountant and has an undergraduate business degree from Sydenham College , University of Bombay . He enjoys playing squash and is an avid diver.
Rajiv Goel, Director, Intel Capital
Rajiv and Rana both focus on Intel's investments in mobile internet clients (including wireless). Prior to Intel, Rajiv worked as CFO for a large company in India.
Ravi Mohan, Managing Director, Shasta Ventures
Mr. Mohan has more than eight years of venture capital experience and will lead Shasta's investments in software and technology-enabled service companies serving the business markets. Prior to co-founding Shasta, he was a General Partner at Battery Ventures, a firm he originally joined as a Kauffman Fellow in 1996. Previously, he was a Summer Associate at McKinsey & Company in 1995. >From 1992 to 1994, Mr. Mohan helped build MIC Software, a custom software development company headquartered in Mumbai , India . Previously, he held positions as a consultant at Hyperion Solution Corporation in 1991 and as a senior consultant for Andersen Consulting from 1989 to 1990.
While at Battery Ventures, Mr. Mohan was a Kauffman Fellow in Battery III and Battery IV, a Principal in Battery IV and V, and a General Partner in Battery VI. He was responsible for eight investments in software and technology-enabled service companies and served on the Board of Directors of the following companies: Addamark, Corillian, Diligent, Enosys, Fasturn, Fincentric, and SupplierMarket. Mr. Mohan is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Indian Venture Capital Association (“IVCA”), Silicon Valley Chapter, and is a Charter Member of The Indus Entrepreneurs (“TiE”).
Mr. Mohan holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan School of Business with Highest Distinction and was awarded a Citibank Fellowship for academic distinction. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University.

Michael Jung, Principal, JPMorgan Partners
Prior to JPMP, Michael Jung was Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development at the Exigen Group, a global provider of business process solutions for companies in the services industry. At Exigen, Mr. Jung managed the company's day-to-day business development activities. Prior to Exigen, he served as Vice President of Strategic Corporate Development at Ask Jeeves, a leading internet and enterprise search company, where he led the company's mergers and acquisitions and strategic partnership efforts. Mr. Jung began his career advising a variety of high technology companies both as an investment banker with BancBoston Robertson Stephens and as an attorney with Gunderson Dettmer. He holds a JD and MBA from the University of Michigan and a BA in Political Economy of Industrial Societies from the University of California at Berkeley . Mr. Jung currently serves on the board of directors for Peakstone, Tidal Software, Celarix and Gridion.

Marcel Gani Internship Application Deadline
The Marcel Gani Internship program places students within a startup, or a venture capital or private equity firm for a 12 week, full-immersion experience. This program gives Ross School of Business students the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial skills while simultaneously accelerating the advancement of the host company. New for 2005, the recommended compensation has been increased to $1,100 per week.
Student application submissions are due on or before January 15, 2005. After 1/15 late applications are accepted. To qualify for a Marcel Gani internship, students must have an application on file at the Zell Lurie Institute. This is necessary in order for sponsor organizations to receive a subsidy. More info...

Dare to Dream Application Deadline
BBAs and MBAs -- Submit your plan for a chance to receive grant funding of up to $10,000. Awards will be made based on the stage of business development - either Assessment or Integration - and the potential for growth of the innovative business.
Eligibility
- Each application must have a University of Michigan Business School student on the team. Cross-campus collaboration is encouraged.
- Evening MBA Students are not eligible in their final term.
- Second year BBAs and MBAs are not eligible winter term.

Lunch with Mike Bowers and Bill Henry -- two career professionals from Comark Modular Building Company who transitioned from professional careers into entrepreneurship with the help of Brazos River Partners, a $250 million Private Equity Fund based in Dallas.
Mike Bowers is a serial entrepreneur who has run companies that build mobile homes, created housing shipped overseas in containers, and his current venture, which builds modular commercial buildings at an enormous scale (up to 200,000 square feet). He has experience in decisions to take companies public, entrepreneurship from the ground up without venture capital, issues of growth and multiple locations, how to negotiate the sale of your business, etc.
Bill Henry has done all the due diligence for Brazos River Partners prior to being tapped as the CEO for Comark. He can speak to issues concerning due diligence (what investors look for and the like) as well as different types of financing that firms might seek in order to grow from a start-up to something larger. He can also talk about issues relating to growth and organization.
